Yorkshire Route 229 Adapts to Roadwork Disruptions
Route 229 buses detour through April 20 due to A62 and Leeds Road construction work
Route 229 Diverts for A62 Roadworks in Huddersfield
Arriva's Route 229 between Huddersfield and Leeds is running on multiple detours through April 20 due to roadworks affecting the A62 and Leeds Road, transit officials said. Four separate service updates are affecting the route, with diversions via Bradley Bar, Bradley Road, and Bradford Road. A free shuttle bus operates every 20 minutes between Huddersfield Bus Station Stand Z and Leeds Road Syngenta to maintain connections for affected riders.

Multiple Roadwork Projects Trigger Service Changes
The diversions stem from concurrent roadwork projects across the route corridor, according to the transit agency. The main disruption involves Leeds Road construction in Huddersfield, while separate A62 roadworks and Wellington Street electrical connection installation in Leeds are creating additional routing challenges. Transit agencies typically implement shuttle services during major roadwork disruptions to maintain access to key stops that fall outside revised routes. Officials didn't specify how long the roadwork projects will continue beyond the April 20 date.
Shuttle Service Covers Gap in Leeds Road Coverage
The free shuttle bus runs from 5 a.m. to 11:30 p.m. on Saturdays and 7 a.m. to 11:30 p.m. on Sundays, officials said. The service connects Huddersfield Bus Station Stand Z with Leeds Road Syngenta, providing access to stops that can't be served during the Leeds Road diversion. Multiple stops are affected by the diversions, including Bradley Tesco, Syngenta, Red Doles Lane, Cooper Bridge, and Leeds Road Tesco. Officials didn't say whether the shuttle will continue operating if roadwork extends beyond the weekend.

Different Diversions Apply by Direction
After Cooper Bridge, the 229 service diverts via Bradley Road and Bradford Road in both directions due to the Leeds Road roadwork, according to the transit agency. The A62 closure forces additional routing through Bradley Bar. In Leeds, Wellington Street roadwork prevents service between Northern Street and Thirsk Row. Leeds-bound buses divert via Northern Street, Whitehall Road, and Thirsk Row, while Cleckheaton and Heckmondwike-bound service follows its normal route through that section.
Riders Advised to Plan for Longer Trips
Passengers should plan journeys in advance and allow extra time for travel during the disruption period, officials said. The multiple diversions will add time to trips, though officials didn't provide estimates of how much longer journeys might take. Riders can check real-time service information and plan trips around the diversions using Moovit, which provides current routing and schedule updates for Route 229 and other Arriva services in the Huddersfield and Leeds area.
