Lockington Bus Cuts Strand Elderly Riders

Elderly residents in Lockington, East Yorkshire, say they're trapped at home by limited bus service that's left them unable to access essential services. The village has just two weekday buses to Beverley, allowing only three and a half hours for errands before the return trip. Barbara Green, 78, who organizes community coffee mornings, said some elderly residents are "absolutely pinned in their homes" and can't reach doctors or pharmacies. The situation's become so severe that some residents have moved away from the village entirely.

Rural Service Decline Accelerates

The Campaign to Protect Rural England reports that a fifth of rural bus routes have disappeared in the past five years, leaving elderly people increasingly cut off from essential services. The nearest bus stop with more frequent services sits over a mile away on the A164, which is inaccessible for many elderly residents in their 80s. Transit agencies across rural England have struggled to maintain service levels as ridership patterns shift and budget constraints tighten. The decline in rural bus service has forced many elderly residents who can't drive to choose between isolation and relocation.

Residents Rush Through Limited Service Window

Kathleen Leighton, 82, said she has to make a list of things to do so she doesn't miss the bus back home from Beverley. The two weekday buses allow passengers a maximum of three and a half hours in town before needing to catch the return service. Elderly residents like Leighton, who can't drive and struggle with mobility, report having to rush through errands without time to socialize. East Riding of Yorkshire Council currently funds the 142 route and two door-to-door minibus services for healthcare appointments and supermarket trips, though officials haven't said whether these services will expand to address the isolation concerns.

Authority Plans Public Consultation

The Hull and East Yorkshire Combined Authority has assumed legal responsibility for public transport and plans to conduct a public consultation, though officials haven't announced a timeline for when that consultation will begin. The complete transfer of all transport functions to HEYCA is expected to be completed by March 2027. Officials haven't said whether service improvements for Lockington are under consideration or what changes might result from the consultation process.

Isolation Forces Difficult Choices

The limited service has forced some residents to move away from Lockington to be closer to doctors, pharmacies, and other necessary services. Elderly residents who remain face difficult choices between staying in their homes with minimal access to essential services or relocating from their community. Moovit provides real-time bus schedules and service updates for East Yorkshire routes, helping riders plan trips within the limited service windows available in rural areas.
