Riders using Route 46 southbound at Grosvenor-Strathmore station will need to board at a different location starting April 27. WMATA announced bus shelter E at the Grosvenor-Strathmore bus loop will temporarily close and service will relocate to temporary stop/shelter F. The closure affects one of the station's bus boarding areas and will last until May 11.
Shelter Replacement Part of System-Wide Upgrade
The temporary closure is part of WMATA's Better Bus initiative launched in 2023 through the Bus Stop and Shelter Improvements Program. The program is replacing some of the region's oldest bus shelters, many of which have been in place for nearly 50 years. Officials said the upgrades aim to improve rider comfort and safety across the system. The initiative addresses aging infrastructure that's reached the end of its useful life at stations throughout the Washington metro area.
New Shelters Feature Enhanced Safety Design
New shelters will feature enhanced safety features including translucent walls, LED-lit roofs for improved visibility, and designated accessibility areas with ADA-compliant seating, according to WMATA. The translucent walls allow better sightlines for security while still providing weather protection. Officials said the LED lighting improves visibility during evening hours. Construction noise during work hours is expected at the site. All temporary bus stop areas and construction zones will be clearly marked for safety.
Temporary Stop Opens April 27 Through May 11
The relocation takes effect April 27, 2026, and will remain in place until May 11, 2026. Riders should follow posted signage directing them to temporary stop/shelter F along the Grosvenor-Strathmore bus loop. Passengers are advised to stay clear of work areas and follow all posted signs during the construction period. Officials didn't specify whether the work could extend beyond the May 11 completion date if weather or other factors cause delays.
