WMATA Shifts M44 Stop West for Safety
WMATA relocates westbound M44, P10 bus stop one block west on East-West Highway due to safety
WMATA Moves M44 Bus Stop One Block West
Riders catching westbound M44 and P10 buses on East-West Highway will need to walk one block farther starting January 26. The Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority's relocating stop 3001877 from 43rd Street to 43rd Avenue permanently, citing safety concerns. The change affects buses heading toward North Bethesda and College Park.

Safety Concerns Drive Permanent Change
Transit officials said the relocation addresses safety issues at the current stop location, though they didn't specify what hazards prompted the move. Bus stop relocations typically result from visibility problems, traffic conflicts, or pedestrian safety concerns identified through incident reports or operational reviews. WMATA operates more than 300 bus routes across the Washington metropolitan area, serving Maryland, Virginia, and the District of Columbia. The agency regularly evaluates stop locations based on ridership patterns, safety data, and community feedback.
One-Block Westward Shift Takes Effect
The westbound stop currently located at East-West Highway and 43rd Street will move one block west to East-West Highway and 43rd Avenue on January 26. Stop ID 3001877 serves routes M44 and P10, both of which will use the new location for all westbound trips. Officials didn't provide ridership figures for the affected stop or say whether the new location will include the same amenities as the current stop. The change is permanent rather than temporary, according to WMATA's advisory, which remains in effect through April 26.
Implementation Begins Late January
The stop relocation takes effect January 26, 2026, with the advisory period running through April 26, 2026. WMATA didn't explain why the advisory extends three months beyond the implementation date or whether additional changes might occur during that period. Transit officials said riders should allow extra time for trips during the transition as they adjust to the new stop location.

Riders Should Plan for New Stop Location
Passengers who regularly use the westbound stop at 43rd Street will need to walk one additional block west to catch M44 and P10 buses starting late January. Officials said riders can contact WMATA at 202-GO-METRO weekdays from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. or weekends from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. with questions about the change. Moovit provides real-time bus locations and updated stop information for WMATA routes throughout the Washington area.
