WMATA Routes Detour for Weekend Event
WMATA D72 and D74 bus routes detour Saturday noon to Sunday 1am for special event
WMATA D72, D74 Routes Detour April 25 for Event
Two WMATA bus routes will detour around a special event this weekend, affecting riders traveling through northwest Washington. Routes D72 and D74 will operate on modified paths from Saturday, April 25 at noon until Sunday, April 26 at 1:00am, transit officials said. The detours will reroute northbound and eastbound buses around the event area while southbound and westbound service continues on regular routes.

Event Requires Temporary Route Changes
The detours are being implemented to accommodate a special event taking place in the area, according to WMATA. Transit agencies typically reroute buses around large public gatherings, street festivals, and permitted events that require road closures. The modifications allow the event to proceed while maintaining bus service to nearby neighborhoods. Officials didn't specify what event is prompting the detours or which streets will be closed during the 13-hour period.
Northbound and Eastbound Routes Affected
Route D72 Connecticut Ave-Mt Pleasant northbound will detour on Connecticut Ave NW at Florida Ave, resuming its regular route on Columbia Rd NW at 17th St, officials said. The southbound direction toward Lafayette Square won't require any detour. Route D74 Rhode Island Ave-Foggy Bottom eastbound will follow the same detour pattern as D72 northbound. The westbound direction to Potomac Park will operate on its regular route without changes, according to the transit agency.

Service Returns Sunday Morning
WMATA will restore normal service once the event concludes and streets reopen early Sunday morning, officials said. The detour period ends at 1:00am on April 26. Transit officials said riders should plan their trips accordingly and allow extra travel time during the detour period. The agency didn't provide details about how much additional time passengers should expect for trips through the affected area.
Riders Advised to Plan Ahead
Passengers traveling through northwest Washington on Saturday afternoon and evening should expect modified routes on the two lines. Officials said riders can allow extra time for trips during the 13-hour detour window. WMATA encourages passengers to sign up for MetroAlerts for real-time service information, though officials didn't specify whether additional notifications about the detour will be sent.
