WMATA Reroutes 3 Bus Lines for Q St NW Work
Three WMATA bus routes will detour around Q Street NW construction starting March 6, affecting riders traveling between Georgetown and Dupont Circle. The C91, D94, and D96 routes will bypass the work zone between 27th and 28th streets through May 1, transit officials said. All eastbound Q Street stops between Wisconsin Avenue NW and Dupont Circle will be closed during the nearly two-month construction period.

Construction Closes Key Georgetown Corridor
The construction work on Q Street NW between 27th and 28th streets requires a complete closure of eastbound bus service through one of Georgetown's primary transit corridors. WMATA has established temporary bus stops to accommodate passengers during the detour period. The affected segment connects residential Georgetown neighborhoods with the Dupont Circle business district, serving commuters and students traveling between the two areas. Transit officials said the work requires the extended closure to complete infrastructure improvements.
Routes Follow Different Detour Patterns
The C91 LeDroit Park-Georgetown route will detour eastbound on Wisconsin Avenue NW at Q Street, resuming regular service on P Street NW at 22nd Street, according to WMATA. The D94 Gallery Place-Sibley Hospital route will follow the same eastbound detour pattern through the construction zone. The D96 Massachusetts Ave-Bethesda route will take a different path, detouring southbound on Wisconsin Avenue NW at Q Street and resuming on Massachusetts Avenue NW at 20th Street. Westbound and northbound services on all three routes will continue on their regular paths without detours.

Detour Runs Through Spring
The detour takes effect Friday, March 6, 2026, and will remain in place through Friday, May 1, 2026, WMATA confirmed. The nearly eight-week timeline allows contractors to complete the Q Street NW infrastructure work between the two affected blocks. Transit officials said they'll monitor the construction schedule and will notify riders if the timeline changes. The agency hasn't said whether the work might be completed ahead of the May 1 end date.
Riders Should Plan Extra Travel Time
Passengers using the affected routes should expect slightly longer travel times due to the detour routing through Wisconsin Avenue, transit officials said. Riders who normally board at closed Q Street stops between Wisconsin Avenue and Dupont Circle will need to use the temporary stop locations WMATA has established along the detour path. The agency encourages passengers to check for real-time service updates before traveling. Moovit provides current bus locations and adjusted arrival times for all three affected WMATA routes during the construction period.
