WMATA Moves 3 Bus Stops on Indian Head Highway

Riders using bus stops along Indian Head Highway will find them in new locations starting September 10, the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority announced. The agency's relocating three stops to accommodate newly completed ADA accessibility pads, affecting routes C11, P93, P94, P95, and P97. The changes will remain in effect through September 30, 2026.

ADA Compliance Drives Stop Adjustments

The relocations are part of WMATA's ongoing efforts to improve accessibility for all riders, transit officials said. Federal ADA requirements mandate that transit agencies provide accessible boarding areas at bus stops, including level concrete pads that accommodate wheelchairs and mobility devices. The completion of these accessibility improvements along Indian Head Highway necessitated moving existing stops to align with the new infrastructure. Transit agencies across the country have been upgrading thousands of bus stops to meet accessibility standards established under the Americans with Disabilities Act.

Stop Locations Shift Up to 285 Feet

The northbound bus stop on Livingston Rd, identified as Stop ID #3000423, has been moved 285 feet south of its previous location—the most significant relocation of the three affected stops. The northbound stop on Audrey Ln, Stop ID #3004184, has been relocated 41 feet south, while the southbound stop on Livingston Rd, Stop ID #3000411, has moved 41 feet north. All three stops now feature the completed ADA accessibility pads that prompted the relocations.

Changes Take Effect in September

The new stop locations will become active September 10, 2025, and remain in place through September 30, 2026, according to WMATA. The agency didn't specify whether the September 2026 end date indicates temporary relocations or represents a standard review period for the changes. Riders should look for updated stop signage and markings at the new locations when the changes take effect.

Riders Encouraged to Check for Updates

Passengers who regularly use the affected stops should plan extra time to locate the new boarding areas, particularly during the first few days after the changes take effect. WMATA encourages customers to sign up for MetroAlerts to receive travel updates about route and stop changes. Moovit provides real-time bus locations and updated stop information for WMATA routes throughout the Washington DC metropolitan area.
