WMATA Relocates Bus Stop to Improve Safety
WMATA relocates westbound bus stop one block west on East-West Highway due to safety concerns
WMATA Moves Bus Stop One Block West on East-West Highway
Riders catching westbound buses on East-West Highway in the Washington area will need to walk one block farther starting January 26. The Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority announced it's permanently relocating the bus stop at East-West Highway and 43rd Street to East-West Highway and 43rd Avenue due to safety concerns. The change affects routes M44 and P10.

Safety Concerns Drive Permanent Change
Transit officials said the relocation addresses safety issues at the current stop location. The westbound stop toward North Bethesda and College Park, identified as stop ID 3001877, will move one block west to improve conditions for waiting passengers. WMATA didn't specify what particular safety hazards prompted the change, but permanent stop relocations typically result from factors like inadequate sidewalk space, poor visibility, or traffic patterns that create risks for boarding passengers. The agency operates bus, rail, and MetroAccess services throughout the Washington metropolitan area.
Two Routes Affected by Stop Move
The M44 and P10 routes will serve the new stop location beginning January 26. Passengers who've used the stop at 43rd Street will need to walk one additional block west to 43rd Avenue to catch westbound buses. The advisory period runs through April 26, 2026, though the relocation itself is permanent. Transit officials said riders should allow extra time for the first few trips after the change takes effect to locate the new stop position. WMATA encourages passengers to sign up for MetroAlerts for service updates, though officials didn't say whether additional signage will be posted at the old stop location directing riders to the new one.
Change Takes Effect Late January
The stop relocation becomes effective January 26, 2026. WMATA didn't announce whether crews will remove the old stop infrastructure immediately or phase out the previous location over time. Riders can contact WMATA at 202-GO-METRO with questions Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m., and weekends from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.
Finding the New Stop Location
Passengers should look for the relocated stop one block west of the current position when the change takes effect. Riders who regularly use the M44 or P10 westbound toward North Bethesda and College Park will need to adjust their walking routes to reach the new boarding location at East-West Highway and 43rd Avenue. Moovit provides real-time bus locations and stop information for WMATA routes, helping riders navigate service changes and find updated stop positions throughout the Washington area.
