Two WMATA bus routes will detour around Dupont Circle every Sunday for nearly a year to accommodate the Fresh Farm Farmers Market, transit officials said. Routes D74 and D90 will follow modified paths starting May 3, 2026, through April 25, 2027, between 6:00am and 3:30pm each Sunday. Massachusetts Avenue will close between 20th Street and Dupont Circle, NW during market hours, requiring buses to use alternate streets.
Market Closure Creates Year-Long Sunday Detours
The Fresh Farm Farmers Market has operated at Dupont Circle for years, drawing crowds that require street closures for vendor stalls and pedestrian access. WMATA routinely adjusts bus routes to accommodate recurring community events, particularly farmers markets that occupy street space during peak weekend hours. The agency coordinates with District officials to minimize disruptions while supporting neighborhood activities. Similar detours occur at other farmers market locations throughout the Washington metro area on weekends.
Four Route Variations Affect Different Directions
Route D74 eastbound toward Rhode Island Avenue won't require any detour and will maintain its regular path. Route D74 westbound toward Potomac Park will detour via Massachusetts Avenue at 20th Street, then resume its regular route on New Hampshire Avenue at 20th Street. Route D90 eastbound toward Mt Vernon Square will detour on Massachusetts Avenue at 20th Street, resuming its regular route on Massachusetts Avenue at 18th Street. Route D90 westbound toward Tenleytown will detour on Massachusetts Avenue at Dupont Circle, resuming its regular route on Massachusetts Avenue at 20th Street.
Sunday Detours Run Through Spring 2027
The detours take effect Sunday, May 3, 2026, and will continue every Sunday through April 25, 2027. Service modifications will be active only during market hours from 6:00am to 3:30pm each Sunday. Regular routing will resume on all other days and outside the specified Sunday timeframe. WMATA said riders should expect the pattern to repeat weekly throughout the 51-week period.
Riders Should Plan Extra Time for Detours
Passengers using routes D74 and D90 on Sunday mornings should allow additional travel time due to the modified routing, transit officials said. The agency advised riders to avoid the Dupont Circle area if possible during market hours. WMATA didn't specify how much extra time riders should budget for trips affected by the detours.
