WMATA Adjusts D40 Stop Access During Construction
WMATA closes D40 bus stop at 7th and F St NW for construction until January 2028
WMATA Closes D40 Bus Stop for Two Years
D40 riders in downtown Washington will need to walk an extra block or two starting January 12, 2026. The Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority announced the northbound bus stop at 7th St at F St, NW will be closed until January 14, 2028, due to construction work in the area. The stop serves buses heading toward Silver Spring Transit Center.

Construction Forces Long-Term Stop Closure
The two-year closure affects stop ID #1003417, one of several D40 stops serving downtown Washington's business district. WMATA officials said construction activity in the area makes it unsafe to operate the stop during the project period. Transit agencies typically close stops for extended periods when roadwork, utility projects, or building construction creates safety hazards or blocks bus access. The agency didn't specify what type of construction is taking place or which entity is managing the project.
Two Alternative Stops Available Nearby
Riders can use two alternate stops during the closure, WMATA said. The nearest replacement is at 7th St at H St, NW (stop ID #1003418), located one block north of the closed stop. A second option is available at E St, NW (stop ID #1000995), one block south of the closure. Both alternate stops serve D40 buses heading toward Silver Spring Transit Center. Officials said customers can board and exit buses at either location throughout the closure period.
Closure Begins January 12, 2026
The stop closure takes effect January 12, 2026, and will remain in place until January 14, 2028, according to WMATA. The agency didn't say whether the closure date could change based on construction progress or if the stop might reopen earlier if work finishes ahead of schedule. WMATA encourages riders to sign up for MetroAlerts for service updates throughout the closure period.
Riders Should Plan for Extra Walking Time
Passengers who regularly use the closed stop should plan their trips accordingly and allow extra time for travel, officials said. The additional walk to alternate stops may add several minutes to commutes, particularly for riders with mobility challenges. Moovit provides real-time D40 bus locations and can help riders navigate to the nearest available stop during the closure.
