WMATA Closes Bus Stop for Utility Work
Riders of two Washington Metro bus routes will need to board at different locations starting Monday. The Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority announced a temporary closure of the westbound bus stop at Minnesota Avenue NE at Benning Road, affecting C33 and D20 routes. The closure runs April 13 through May 15, daily from 8:30 AM to 3:30 PM, to accommodate utility work in the area.

Utility Work Requires Daytime Access
The closure affects stop #1000988 on the westbound side of Minnesota Avenue NE at Benning Road. Transit officials said the daytime-only closure allows utility crews to work safely while maintaining evening and overnight bus service. The five-week closure window gives contractors time to complete infrastructure improvements in the corridor. WMATA typically coordinates such closures with utility companies and construction contractors to minimize disruptions while ensuring worker safety.
Alternative Stops at Metro Station
Both affected routes will use stops at the nearby Minnesota Avenue Metro station during closure hours. C33 passengers should board at Bus Bay B, stop #1002995, while D20 riders should use Bus Bay K, stop #1003215. The station bays are located approximately two blocks from the closed stop. Officials said the station stops offer covered waiting areas and real-time arrival information displays. Riders should allow extra time for the walk to alternative boarding locations, particularly during the morning commute.
Closure Runs Through Mid-May
The temporary closure begins Monday, April 13, 2026, and continues through Friday, May 15, 2026. Service restrictions apply only during daytime hours, from 8:30 AM to 3:30 PM each day. The original stop location will remain available for evening and overnight service outside those hours. WMATA said riders should check for updates as the project progresses, since utility work timelines can sometimes shift based on weather or unforeseen conditions.

Real-Time Updates Available
Riders can stay informed about the closure and any schedule changes through WMATA's MetroAlerts system. The agency encourages customers to sign up for notifications about affected routes. Moovit provides real-time bus tracking and alternative route suggestions for C33 and D20 riders navigating the temporary stop changes, helping passengers plan trips around the closure.
