WMATA Adjusts Bus Stops for Construction Work
Two bus stops on Alabama Ave SE relocate May 4, one temporarily for two years
WMATA Moves Bus Stops on Alabama Ave SE May 4
Two bus stops on Alabama Avenue SE at 13th Street will relocate starting May 4, 2026, affecting riders on Routes C21 and C53, transit officials said. The Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority announced one temporary and one permanent stop relocation due to construction work in the area. The westbound stop will move for two years, while the eastbound stop's relocation is permanent.

Construction Drives Two-Year Changes
The stop relocations are part of ongoing construction work along the Alabama Avenue SE corridor, according to WMATA. Transit agencies typically relocate stops temporarily during infrastructure projects to maintain safety and access for riders while work progresses. The westbound stop relocation will last through May 4, 2028, making it one of the longer temporary stop moves in the system. Officials didn't specify what construction project is driving the changes or whether additional stops might be affected.
Stops Move in Opposite Directions
The westbound bus stop at Alabama Ave SE and 13th St (Stop ID #1003588) will move approximately 280 feet west, across 13th Street near the Whitman-Walker Max Robinson Center. Riders can board and exit at the temporary location starting May 4, 2026. The eastbound stop at the same intersection (Stop ID #1003320) will permanently relocate about 100 feet east toward Bard High School Early College. Both Routes C21 and C53, which serve the area, will use the new stop locations.

Changes Take Effect in May 2026
Both relocations begin Monday, May 4, 2026, WMATA confirmed. The westbound stop's temporary move will remain in place through Thursday, May 4, 2028, while the eastbound stop's new location is permanent. Officials said riders should allow extra time to locate the new stops during the first few days after the changes take effect.
Riders Can Track Stop Changes
Passengers on Routes C21 and C53 should watch for signage directing them to the new stop locations starting in early May. WMATA encourages customers to sign up for MetroAlerts for service updates, though officials didn't say whether advance notification will be sent specifically about these relocations. Moovit provides real-time bus locations and stop information for WMATA routes throughout the Washington metropolitan area, helping riders navigate service changes.
