WMATA Adjusts Bus Stops for Construction Work
Two bus stops on Alabama Ave SE relocate May 4, 2026 due to construction work
WMATA Moves Bus Stops on Alabama Ave SE May 4
Two bus stops on Alabama Ave SE at 13th St will relocate starting May 4, 2026, affecting riders on routes C21 and C53. The Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority announced the changes, with one stop moving temporarily for two years and another relocating permanently. Both moves are due to construction in the area, transit officials said.

Construction Drives Two-Year Changes
The relocations are part of ongoing construction work along the Alabama Ave SE corridor that'll continue through May 2028. WMATA typically adjusts bus stop locations when roadwork or development projects affect passenger access or safety. The authority serves the Washington metropolitan area with rail, bus, and MetroAccess services. Transit officials said the temporary westbound relocation will remain in effect for the full two-year construction period, while the eastbound change is permanent.
Stops Move 280 and 100 Feet
The westbound bus stop will temporarily relocate approximately 280 feet west, across 13th St near the Whitman-Walker Max Robinson Center, starting Monday, May 4, 2026, through Thursday, May 4, 2028. The eastbound stop will permanently move about 100 feet east toward Bard High School Early College beginning the same date. Customers will board and exit at the new locations for routes C21 and C53. Officials didn't specify whether additional signage or shelter amenities will be installed at the temporary westbound location.
Changes Take Effect May 4, 2026
Both bus stop relocations begin Monday, May 4, 2026, with the westbound temporary stop remaining through Thursday, May 4, 2028. The eastbound relocation is permanent with no planned return to the original location. WMATA encourages customers to sign up for MetroAlerts for service updates and construction-related changes. The authority offers customer support Monday through Friday from 7 am to 8 pm and weekends from 8 am to 8 pm.

Riders Should Plan for New Boarding Locations
Passengers who regularly use the Alabama Ave SE stops at 13th St should allow extra time to locate the new boarding areas starting May 4. The westbound stop's 280-foot relocation means riders will need to walk nearly a full block west to catch their bus. Moovit provides real-time bus locations and stop information for WMATA routes C21 and C53 to help riders navigate the changes. Officials said customers should look for temporary signage directing them to the relocated stops.
