WMATA Adjusts Bus Stop for Station Upgrade
WMATA closes Pennsylvania Ave SE bus stop for two years due to Potomac Avenue Station work
WMATA Closes Bus Stop on Pennsylvania Ave SE
Riders of two Washington Metro bus routes will need to find a new boarding location starting March 9, 2026. The Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority announced a permanent closure of the westbound bus stop on Pennsylvania Avenue SE at 14th Street, affecting D10 and D1X passengers. The closure stems from the Potomac Avenue Station project and will remain in effect through March 9, 2028.

Station Project Drives Infrastructure Changes
The bus stop closure is part of ongoing infrastructure improvements tied to the Potomac Avenue Station project, according to WMATA. Transit agencies typically close stops near major construction sites to ensure passenger safety and provide contractors with necessary work space. The project represents one of several infrastructure upgrades WMATA's undertaken in recent years to modernize aging facilities across the system. Officials said the permanent nature of the closure indicates the stop location conflicts with long-term station improvements.
Alternative Stop Located One Block Away
Affected passengers will use an alternative bus stop on Pennsylvania Avenue SE at Potomac Avenue, identified as stop ID #1002965. The relocated stop sits approximately one block east of the closed location. Both D10 and D1X routes will serve the alternative stop, maintaining service to the area. WMATA didn't specify whether the new stop location will feature the same amenities as the closed stop, such as shelters or benches.

Two-Year Closure Period Announced
The closure takes effect March 9, 2026, and will remain in place through March 9, 2028, WMATA confirmed. The advisory became effective immediately upon announcement, giving riders nearly two years' advance notice. Officials didn't provide details about what specific station improvements will occur during this period or whether the closure timeline could be shortened if construction progresses ahead of schedule.
Riders Should Plan for Boarding Location Change
Passengers who regularly use the affected stop should allow extra time for boarding at the new location, WMATA said. The agency apologized for any inconvenience and encouraged customers to sign up for service alerts. Riders can track real-time bus arrivals and plan trips using Moovit, which provides updates for all WMATA routes including the D10 and D1X lines.
