West Midlands Reroutes Buses for Street Upgrade
Sparkbrook bus routes 1 and 41 detour March 20 for street furniture installation work
Sparkbrook Bus Routes 1, 41 Reroute March 20
Bus riders in Sparkbrook will need to plan for detours on March 20 as routes 1 and 41 temporarily reroute around a road closure. Springfield Road between Stratford Road and College Road will close from 9:30am to 2:30pm for street furniture installation, transit officials said. Both services will follow alternative paths during the five-hour closure, with service returning to normal routes after 2:30pm.

Street Work Prompts Friday Closure
The Friday closure allows contractors to install street furniture along Springfield Road's central section, according to the transit agency. Officials said the work requires full road closure for safety and equipment access. The affected stretch connects two major corridors in the Sparkbrook area, making it a key route for local bus services. Transit agencies typically schedule such infrastructure work during off-peak hours to minimize rider impact, though officials didn't specify why midday timing was chosen for this project.
Detailed Diversion Routes Announced
Service 1 buses heading toward Acocks Green will detour via Wake Green Road, Cole Bank Road, Stratford Road, Cateswell Road, and Shaftmore Lane roundabout before rejoining the regular route. Service 1 buses traveling toward Five Ways won't be affected and will maintain normal routing. Service 41 buses bound for Acocks Green will follow Wake Green Road, Cole Bank Road, and Stratford Road, while QE Hospital-bound Service 41 buses will reverse that diversion path. Officials said all diverted buses will serve stops along the alternative routes where possible.

Five-Hour Window for Infrastructure Work
The closure takes effect at 9:30am Friday, March 20, 2026, with roads reopening and normal service resuming by 2:30pm the same day. Transit officials said the compressed timeline aims to complete necessary work while limiting disruption to a single weekday period. The agency didn't provide details on whether additional street furniture installations are planned for other Sparkbrook corridors or if this represents a one-time project.
Riders Urged to Allow Extra Time
Passengers using routes 1 and 41 on March 20 should expect longer journey times due to the detours, transit officials said. The diversions add several turns and additional stops compared to standard routing through Springfield Road. Riders can check real-time bus locations and updated arrival times through Moovit, which provides live tracking for Birmingham bus services during disruptions. Officials advised travelers with time-sensitive appointments to consider earlier buses or alternative routes for the morning and early afternoon periods.
