West Midlands Rail Expands Sensory Support Tools
London Northwestern Railway restocks free sensory packs and communication tools for neurodiverse passengers
LNR Adds Free Sensory Packs for Neurodiverse Riders
London Northwestern Railway is expanding support for neurodiverse passengers with free sensory packs and communication tools available at stations. The train operator is restocking stations with the packs during Neurodiversity Celebration Week, which runs March 16-20, 2026. The initiative includes sensory packs, journey planner notepads, and Travel Assistance Cards designed to help passengers who experience sensory overload or need communication support while traveling.
Background on Accessibility Support
The sensory packs launched last summer and received positive feedback from passengers, according to the transit agency. Each pack contains foam ear plugs, sunglasses, fidget toys, and a stress ball to help neurodiverse customers manage sensory challenges during their journeys. The packs are available free on request from ticket offices across LNR's network. Transit agencies increasingly offer specialized support for neurodiverse passengers as awareness grows about the challenges some riders face in busy station environments and crowded trains.

New Communication Tools Rolled Out
Journey planner notepads are being rolled out across LNR's network following a successful trial earlier this year. Ticket office staff can use the notepads to write down journey plans for passengers who prefer written information on paper. Each notepad page includes information on how to book passenger assistance, customer relations contact details, and social media handles. Travel Assistance Cards are also available free from stations and feature phrases like "I need help buying a ticket" and "Please be patient, I have a disability" to support customers who need help communicating with staff.

Staff Training and Implementation
LNR colleagues receive accessibility training to ensure passengers feel confident asking staff for support, according to the transit agency. The training helps staff recognize when passengers may need assistance and how to provide appropriate support. Officials didn't specify how many staff members have completed the training or provide details on the training program's duration and content.
Impact on Passengers
The expanded accessibility tools aim to make rail travel more comfortable for neurodiverse passengers across LNR's network, which includes services between Liverpool and Birmingham and on the West Coast Main Line to and from London Euston. Passengers can request sensory packs at any staffed ticket office or order Travel Assistance Cards online. Moovit provides real-time updates and trip planning for LNR routes to help passengers plan accessible journeys.
