Three National Express West Midlands drivers advance to UK Bus Driver finals in June
West Midlands Drivers Reach UK Bus Finals
Three National Express West Midlands bus drivers will compete in the UK Bus Driver of the Year 2025 national finals after winning regional heats in March. Darren Gale, Jas Dhillon, and Balbir Gill from Yardley Wood garage qualified for the June 8 competition in Blackpool, officials announced Tuesday. The drivers emerged from regional heats held at the company's Acocks Green garage.

Competition Tests Professional Skills
The UK Bus Driver of the Year competition is organized annually by the Confederation of Passenger Transport UK, the national trade body for bus and coach operators. The event tests comprehensive professional competencies beyond basic driving ability. National Express West Midlands operates approximately 1,600 buses serving over 300,000 passenger journeys daily across the region, providing context for the competitive selection process that led these three drivers to the national stage.
Multiple Skills Assessed
The competition evaluates drivers on manoeuvring, hazard perception, Highway Code knowledge, and customer service skills, according to the transit agency. Officials didn't provide details about how many drivers participated in the regional heats or the total number of finalists competing nationally. David Bradford, managing director at National Express West Midlands, said the competition is "a true test of skill, professionalism and dedication - qualities our drivers demonstrate every single day as they serve our customers across the West Midlands."

Finals Set for June
The national finals take place June 8 in Blackpool, where the three West Midlands drivers will compete against finalists from across the UK. Bradford told reporters the company is "incredibly proud of Darren, Jas and Balbir for making it through to the national finals" and wished them "the very best of luck in Blackpool." Officials haven't said whether National Express West Midlands drivers have placed in previous years' competitions.
Recognition for Driver Excellence
The qualification highlights professional standards among drivers who serve West Midlands communities daily on routes throughout Birmingham, Coventry, Solihull, Walsall, Wolverhampton, and surrounding areas. Riders can track real-time service information and route updates through Moovit, which provides current schedules for National Express West Midlands routes across the region.
