V/Line Offers Free Travel Until May 31

Victoria's V/Line passengers won't pay fares through May 31, 2026, as the regional rail operator eliminates ticket costs on all train and coach services. Transit officials said riders don't need to tap on or purchase tickets during the free travel period. Passengers who've already bought tickets for travel through May 31 can claim refunds online or at staffed stations.

Free Travel Part of Cost-of-Living Relief

The fare elimination is part of a broader initiative to provide immediate cost-of-living relief for Victorians, according to the transit agency. Officials said the program aims to reduce transportation costs for regional travelers who rely on V/Line services for work, education, and essential trips. The free travel period covers eight major train lines including Warrnambool, Ararat, Maryborough, Shepparton, Albury, Echuca, Swan Hill, and Bairnsdale routes. Transit agencies across Australia have implemented similar temporary fare reductions in recent years to address rising household expenses.

Reservations Still Required for Some Services

Most V/Line train services don't require seat reservations during the free travel period, officials said. However, some scheduled coach services still need reservations at zero cost, and an interstate levy applies for journeys starting or ending outside Victoria. Officials didn't specify which coach routes require advance booking. V/Line expects services to be busier than usual and encourages passengers to plan ahead, arrive early, and travel outside peak periods when possible.

Half-Price Fares Begin June 1

From June 1, 2026, through Jan. 1, 2027, public transport will be half price for all passengers in Victoria. Full fare daily caps will drop from $11.40 to $5.70, while concession fares will fall from $5.70 to $2.85. Frequent travelers could save up to $732 during the discount period, officials said. The half-price initiative extends the cost relief beyond the initial free travel period.

Riders Should Plan for Crowded Services

Passengers with accessibility needs are encouraged to call 1800 800 007 before traveling to ensure staff can provide appropriate assistance, officials said. V/Line expects higher ridership during the free travel period and recommends arriving early at stations. Moovit provides real-time updates for V/Line services, helping riders track train and coach arrivals and plan trips across Victoria's regional network.
