VIC Offers Free Transit Through May 31
V/Line eliminates fares until May 31, then offers half-price travel through 2027
V/Line Offers Free Travel Until May 31
Victoria's V/Line riders won't pay fares through May 31, transit officials said. The agency announced passengers don't need to tap on or purchase tickets during the free travel period on all train and coach services across the state. Officials said they expect services to be busier than usual and encourage riders to plan ahead and arrive early.

Background
The free fare initiative covers V/Line's entire network, including Warrnambool, Ararat, Maryborough, Shepparton, Albury, Echuca, Swan Hill, and Bairnsdale lines, according to the transit agency. Seat reservations aren't required for most train services, though some scheduled coach services still require zero-cost reservations. Officials said an interstate levy applies for journeys starting or ending outside Victoria. The agency said the move aims to provide immediate cost-of-living relief for Victorians.
Refund Process
Passengers who've already purchased tickets for travel through May 31 can claim refunds online or at staffed stations, officials said. The agency's offering refunds through its customer feedback form on its website or in person at any staffed V/Line station. Officials didn't specify how long the refund process takes. Passengers with accessibility needs are encouraged to call 1800 800 007 before traveling to ensure staff can provide appropriate assistance, the agency said.

Half-Price Fares Follow
From June 1 through Jan. 1, 2027, public transport will be half price for all passengers in Victoria, officials said. Full fare daily caps will drop from $11.40 to $5.70, while concession fares will fall from $5.70 to $2.85. Frequent travelers could save up to $732 during the discount period, according to the transit agency.
Rider Impact
Officials expect higher ridership during the free fare period and encourage passengers to travel outside peak periods when possible. The agency said riders should plan trips in advance given anticipated crowding. Moovit provides real-time updates and service information for V/Line trains and coaches across Victoria, helping riders track arrivals and plan journeys during the free and discounted fare periods.
