Veteran Gains Mobility After Relying on Transit
Marine Corps veteran receives refurbished 2022 Nissan Sentra to ease work commute and medical visits
Veteran Gets Car After Relying on Transit
A Marine Corps veteran who'd been depending on public transportation and a bicycle to manage chronic health challenges received a fully refurbished vehicle during a Montgomery County ceremony. Joseph Butler was gifted a 2022 Nissan Sentra through a partnership between nonprofit Friendship Place, the National Auto Body Council's Recycled Rides program, Geico, and Caliber Collision. The car will help Butler commute to work and attend medical appointments more easily.

Transit Reliance Made Health Management Difficult
Butler had been using public transportation and his bicycle for daily commuting, which made managing his chronic health challenges increasingly difficult, according to program organizers. The collaboration between multiple organizations aimed to address transportation barriers that veterans and others face when accessing employment and healthcare. Representative Glenn Ivey attended the ceremony and emphasized how such initiatives can transform lives by providing reliable transportation to those who need it most.
Partnership Delivers Refurbished Vehicle
The gift was made possible through a collaboration between the nonprofit Friendship Place, the National Auto Body Council's Recycled Rides program, Geico, and Caliber Collision. Dale Ross, program manager for NABC Recycled Rides, noted that hearing about Butler's transportation struggles motivated them to help. The Recycled Rides program refurbishes donated vehicles and awards them to families and individuals in need, with a focus on veterans, domestic violence survivors, and others facing transportation challenges.
Veteran Expresses Gratitude at Unveiling
Butler expressed overwhelming gratitude and excitement during the unveiling ceremony held in Montgomery County, Maryland. He stated that the car will help him commute to work and attend doctor's appointments more easily. The veteran also mentioned that the gift gives him hope and helps him regain his independence after relying on less reliable transportation options.

First Trip Plans Celebrate New Independence
Butler plans to celebrate by taking his family to a nice restaurant as his first trip in the new car. The vehicle represents more than just transportation—it provides the veteran with renewed independence and easier access to healthcare and employment.
