TfL Adds Step-Free Access to South Kensington

South Kensington Tube station will become fully accessible for the first time, with Transport for London advancing plans to add step-free access to all platforms. The redevelopment project has been included in TfL's latest Business Plan, marking a significant milestone for the station that serves tens of millions of passengers annually. The improvements will benefit wheelchair users, passengers with buggies, and anyone with mobility needs who've long struggled with the station's stairs.

Major Accessibility Overhaul Planned

The transformation represents one of London's most comprehensive station accessibility upgrades in recent years. TfL's working with development partners Native Land and Places for London to deliver the improvements, which received full planning permission in December 2023. The project combines essential transit infrastructure with broader urban development around the historic station. South Kensington's current layout has made it particularly challenging for passengers with mobility limitations, requiring them to navigate multiple staircases to reach platforms serving the Circle, District, and Piccadilly lines.

New Entrance and Platform Construction

A new accessible entrance will be built on Thurloe Street, providing direct access to the ticket hall, platforms, and the subway connecting to nearby museums. TfL will construct a dedicated eastbound platform for the Circle and District lines, complete with lifts to both these platforms and the Piccadilly line. The development will add 50 new homes and office space around the station, including affordable housing and a distinctive four-story Bullnose building. The project also includes restoration of the historic arcade within the station, preserving architectural features while modernizing functionality.

Construction Timeline Set for 2026

Enabling works for the around-station development are scheduled to begin later in 2026, with detailed design work progressing in the coming months. Both the station improvements and surrounding development will follow a coordinated program to minimize disruption to passengers and local residents during construction. Officials haven't specified an exact completion date for the accessibility improvements or how long the full construction phase will last.

Riders to See Improved Station Access

The improvements will make South Kensington one of the more accessible stations in central London, particularly benefiting visitors to the nearby museums and residents in the surrounding area. Passengers can expect construction activity to increase as enabling works begin, though TfL said it'll maintain service throughout the project.
