Temple U Connects Students to Transit Careers
Temple University launches biweekly sustainability workshops connecting students with transit professionals
Temple U Adds Transit Workshops for Students
Temple University students interested in sustainable transportation can now attend biweekly workshops that connect them with transit professionals and career opportunities. The university's Office of Sustainability runs the EcoReps workshops throughout each semester, covering topics including public transit, recycling, and environmental research. The program encourages students to use Philadelphia's public transit system for experiential learning trips to local cultural sites.
The workshops address local and global environmental issues while helping students network with peers and alumni who share sustainability interests. Transit Forward Philadelphia's coalition manager presented during the spring 2026 semester, along with representatives from Climate Action PA and Temple alumna Zamira Chevrestt, who works for a nonprofit addressing marine pollution. Officials said the program aims to prepare students for careers in environmental fields while building campus awareness of sustainability issues.

The EcoReps program is open to students of all majors, not just those pursuing sustainability careers, according to the Office of Sustainability. Participants serve as campus representatives who help implement Temple's Climate Action Plan through outreach and community engagement. The program also offers hands-on service opportunities including Zero Waste programs and the Departmental Compost Program. Student leaders like Alejandro Sanoja coordinate initiatives that collect ink, toner, and 3D-printer waste for proper recycling across campus.
Workshop sessions occur biweekly throughout each semester, with topics rotating to cover different aspects of sustainability. The spring 2026 semester included presentations on transit advocacy, climate policy, and marine conservation. Officials didn't specify which topics will be featured in upcoming semesters, though the program continues to emphasize practical applications of environmental principles. Students participate in experiential learning trips using Philadelphia's public transit to visit sites like The Fabric Workshop and Museum.

Students who participate in the workshops gain exposure to sustainability careers while contributing to campus environmental goals. The program connects participants with professionals working in transit planning, climate advocacy, and environmental nonprofits. Temple students can use Moovit to plan trips on Philadelphia's public transit system when attending workshop field visits and community service activities throughout the city.
