Tallahassee Transit Adapts for Thanksgiving Holiday
Tallahassee's StarMetro suspends all bus service November 27, resumes Friday with reduced hours
StarMetro Cuts Service for Thanksgiving
Tallahassee's StarMetro won't run buses or Dial-A-Ride service on Thanksgiving Day, transit officials said. The agency announced November 25 that all service will be suspended Thursday, November 27, affecting riders who depend on public transit for work, medical appointments, or holiday travel. The complete shutdown is standard practice for transit agencies during major holidays.

StarMetro serves about 196,000 Tallahassee residents and provides roughly 1.8 million passenger trips annually, according to city data. The Thanksgiving service suspension affects both the agency's fixed-route bus system and its Dial-A-Ride paratransit service for riders with disabilities. Transit agencies across Florida typically suspend service on Thanksgiving, with Jacksonville's JTA and Orlando's Lynx following similar practices. Officials didn't provide ridership estimates for how many passengers would be affected by the holiday changes.
Service returns Friday, November 28, but buses will run on a Sunday schedule with no night service, officials said. Sunday schedules typically feature reduced frequency and fewer active routes compared to weekday service. The agency didn't specify what time service will end Friday or how many routes will operate on the modified schedule. Riders should expect longer waits between buses and plan for service to end earlier than usual.

The changes take effect November 27 and continue through November 28, with regular weekday service expected to resume Monday, December 1. Officials announced the modifications via social media rather than a formal press release. Autumn Calder serves as StarMetro's director, overseeing the agency's operations under City Manager Reese Goad. The agency hasn't said whether similar service changes are planned for other upcoming holidays.
Riders who need transportation on Thanksgiving should arrange alternative options, as no public transit will be available that day. Those traveling Friday should check Sunday schedules in advance and allow extra time for trips. StarMetro's website provides schedule information, though officials didn't specify when detailed Friday timetables would be posted. Moovit provides real-time updates for StarMetro routes to help riders plan trips during the modified service period.
