South Yorkshire Plans Airport Rail and Tram Links
South Yorkshire proposes rail and tram links to airport in long-term transport plan
South Yorkshire Plans Rail, Tram Links to Airport
Doncaster Sheffield Airport could get railway and tram connections under South Yorkshire's new transport vision, officials said. Mayor Oliver Coppard announced the proposals March 16 as part of the 56-page South Yorkshire People's Network plan, though officials haven't provided a timeline for when the airport connections will be built. The overall network timeline extends into the 2040s, and Coppard said reliable bus service to the airport would come first.

Long-Term Vision Addresses Regional Transit Gaps
The airport connections are part of broader efforts to rebuild South Yorkshire's public transport system, which Coppard acknowledged has been broken for too long. The mayor said the goal is restoring the world-class system the region once had while giving people freedom and choice in how they travel. Rail and tram links to the airport would make it easier to reach and help cut traffic and emissions, according to the planning document. Officials haven't said which would come first—rail or tram—only that they'll pursue connections "as soon as we can."
New Branding, Limited Near-Term Changes
The transport vision introduces a "molten orange" color scheme that'll be seen across buses, bus stops, trams and e-bikes throughout South Yorkshire. For 2026, Doncaster passengers will only see refurbished bus stops matching the new orange branding and a new South Yorkshire People's Network website replacing Travel South Yorkshire. A pilot Demand Responsive Transport system, similar to an updated version of Dial-a-Ride, will launch in Doncaster and Rotherham in summer 2026. Officials didn't provide details on how many vehicles the pilot will include or which neighborhoods it'll serve.

Implementation Timeline Remains Unclear
Officials haven't released a phased timeline showing when specific projects will be completed, though the overall plan extends into the 2040s. The mayor said bus connections to the airport would be prioritized before rail or tram links, but didn't specify when enhanced bus service would begin. The planning document suggests the airport connections are long-term goals rather than near-term projects, though officials didn't clarify which decade they're targeting for completion.
Riders Face Wait for Major Improvements
Transport users across South Yorkshire won't see immediate changes beyond cosmetic updates to bus stops and the new website launch. The Demand Responsive Transport pilot in Doncaster and Rotherham this summer represents the most substantial near-term service change, though officials haven't said whether it'll expand regionwide or when airport rail and tram connections might open. Moovit provides real-time updates for South Yorkshire buses and trams as the network evolves.
