Silver Spring Station Builds Multi-Transit Hub
New mezzanine at Silver Spring Station will connect Purple Line, Metro, and MARC by 2026
Purple Line Builds Mezzanine at Silver Spring
Maryland's Purple Line construction crews are building a new mezzanine at Silver Spring Station that'll connect the future light rail platform to Metro, MARC commuter trains, and the Paul S. Sarbanes Transit Center, officials said. The project, which started in April 2023, continues through 2026 and aims to improve connections between transit services while increasing capacity and accessibility. Riders transferring between services should expect detours and allow extra travel time during construction.

Multi-Year Project Enhances Transit Connections
The Maryland Department of Transportation MTA's construction work focuses on creating seamless connections between three major transit systems at one of the region's busiest transfer points. Silver Spring Station serves as a critical hub where Metrorail's Red Line, MARC's Brunswick Line, and numerous Metrobus routes converge. The new mezzanine will replace aging infrastructure and provide better accessibility features for customers with mobility needs. Transit agencies typically undertake such complex construction at active stations to avoid forcing complete closures that would disrupt thousands of daily commuters.
Barriers and Detours Reshape Station Access
Construction crews completed a 200-foot-long protective barrier on the Metro platform in May 2023 to separate riders from the Purple Line work zone, with accessible pathways maintained on both sides for boarding trains. The barrier's expected to remain through summer 2024. In July 2023, officials closed and demolished the pedestrian bridge to the MARC platform on the transit center's second level. Riders now use an accessible detour along Ripley Street that'll stay in place for approximately two years, accessible from the third level of Silver Spring Transit Center.

Construction Timeline Extends Through 2026
The mezzanine construction work continues through 2026, officials confirmed. Platform barricades were expected to remain through summer 2024, though officials haven't provided updated timelines for subsequent construction phases. The pedestrian detour along Ripley Street will remain for approximately two years from its July 2023 establishment. Transit officials said they'll maintain accessible routes throughout the construction period but didn't specify when normal station access patterns will resume.
Riders Face Extended Detours During Work
Metrobus and Metrorail customers transferring to or from MARC trains must follow the Ripley Street pedestrian detour, adding several minutes to connection times. Officials advised riders to allow extra time for trips and stay clear of construction zones for safety. The completed mezzanine will eventually provide direct indoor connections between all three transit services, eliminating the need for outdoor transfers.
