Sheffield to provide free bus travel for under-18s from January 2027 onward
Sheffield Adds Free Bus Travel for Under-18s in 2027
Sheffield will offer free bus travel to all residents under 18 starting in January 2027, transit officials confirmed. The initiative expands the MiCard program that's already served over 17,000 young riders in Barnsley since August 2025. South Yorkshire Mayor Oliver Coppard said the region's transport system has been "broken for too long."

Building on Barnsley's Success
The free travel scheme builds on Barnsley's MiCard program, which launched in August 2025 and provided free bus access to children aged five to 18 by January 2026. The expansion addresses long-standing public transport challenges across South Yorkshire, according to transit officials. The initiative shifts focus from profit-driven services to people-centered planning under the South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority. Bailey Hargate, a Barnsley College student working with SYMCA, said the program helps young people who can't afford driving lessons or car access.
£350 Million Investment in Regional Transit
The People's Network plan includes a £350 million investment in reforming South Yorkshire's bus system and enhancing the tram network, officials said. The South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority will take control of the region's bus network in summer 2027. Following Sheffield's rollout, the free travel scheme will extend to Rotherham and Doncaster, creating region-wide accessible transport for young people. The broader initiative aims to encourage public transport use among students traveling to college, work, and apprenticeships.

Phased Regional Rollout Through 2027
Sheffield's free bus travel for under-18s takes effect in January 2027, with the broader People's Network launching in summer 2027 when SYMCA assumes control of regional bus operations. Rotherham and Doncaster will receive the free travel program after Sheffield's implementation, though officials haven't announced specific dates for those expansions. The phased approach allows the authority to build on lessons learned from Barnsley's successful pilot program.
Mixed Reactions from Sheffield Residents
Sheffield residents have expressed mixed reactions on social media, with many praising the move as supporting young people's access to education and employment. Some residents called for extending the scheme to students and apprentices of all ages, while others suggested making public transport free for everyone to reduce car usage. Riders can track Sheffield bus schedules and service updates through Moovit, which provides real-time transit information across South Yorkshire.
