West Portal Completes Safety Upgrades

San Francisco's West Portal neighborhood now has completed street safety improvements and beautification upgrades designed to protect pedestrians and calm traffic. The $3.2 million project finished November 5, officials confirmed, following a tragic March 2024 crash that killed four people at the Muni station. Jeffrey Tumlin, Director of Transportation at the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency, said the changes will reduce speeds and improve visibility throughout the area.

Tragedy Prompted Rapid Safety Response

The improvements came after an SUV struck and killed a family of four at West Portal station on March 16, 2024, prompting immediate calls for safety changes. SFMTA began implementing Quick-Build safety measures that April, using low-cost materials and rapid installation methods to test improvements before permanent construction. The approach reflects San Francisco's Vision Zero policy, adopted in 2014, which commits the city to eliminating all traffic deaths. Similar Quick-Build projects have been deployed across San Francisco and in other cities like New York and Seattle following serious crashes.

Multiple Safety Features Installed

The $3.2 million project included traffic calming measures, pedestrian safety enhancements, and landscaping improvements throughout West Portal, though officials didn't release a detailed breakdown of costs by component. "The West Portal improvements demonstrate how we can work together with communities to create safer streets," Tumlin told reporters at the November 5 celebration. The upgrades involved multiple traffic safety features, though the agency hasn't specified exact counts of curb extensions, upgraded crosswalks, or modified signals installed.

Community Partnership Shaped Project

Myrna Melgar, Supervisor for District 7, said the project reflected close collaboration with West Portal residents and businesses. "I'm grateful to the West Portal community for their partnership throughout this process," Melgar said at the November 5 event. "These improvements honor the memory of those we lost and will help prevent future tragedies while making our neighborhood more beautiful." Mayor Daniel Lurie called the project a demonstration of the city's commitment to neighborhood safety across San Francisco.

Changes Affect Major Transit Hub

West Portal serves as a major Muni station where multiple light rail lines converge, making the safety improvements significant for daily commuters throughout San Francisco's southwest neighborhoods. The completed upgrades aim to make the area safer for the thousands of riders who transfer between lines at the station each day.
