SFMTA Adds Transit Month Events in January
San Francisco's transit system will host a month of community events celebrating public transportation throughout January. The San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency announced Transit Month 2025 on Tuesday, with activities designed to connect riders with Muni services. Jeffrey Tumlin, Director of Transportation, said the celebration recognizes employees who keep the system running and invites residents to explore how transit connects the community.

Transit Month marks an annual tradition for SFMTA, which operates over 80 Muni routes serving approximately 500,000 daily riders. The agency's celebrating public transportation's role in sustainable urban mobility and community connectivity. Officials said the initiative aims to promote transit options while the system continues recovering ridership toward pre-pandemic levels. San Francisco's Municipal Railway, established in 1912, remains one of the nation's oldest public transit systems.
The celebration kicks off January 11 at Embarcadero Plaza from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., followed by the Cable Car Bell Ringing Contest at Union Square on January 18. A Community Transit Fair at Civic Center Plaza closes the month on January 25. The agency hasn't disclosed the budget for Transit Month activities or provided attendance projections for the events. Officials said the programming brings together transit enthusiasts, daily commuters and community members throughout the month.

The month-long celebration runs throughout January 2025, with three major events scheduled on consecutive Saturdays. Officials announced the initiative in early November to give residents advance notice of the programming. The agency typically hosts Transit Month annually, though specific details about past years' attendance weren't immediately available. SFMTA said it'll promote the events through its regular communication channels as January approaches.
Riders can participate in any of the three scheduled events to learn more about San Francisco's transit network and connect with agency staff. The celebration offers opportunities to explore Muni's various service options and understand how public transportation supports the city's sustainability goals.
