SF Police Boost Safety at Light Rail Construction Zone
SJPD begins two-week traffic enforcement at Capitol Expressway and Ocala Avenue for light rail work
SJPD Adds Traffic Enforcement at East San Jose Site
Drivers heading through East San Jose will encounter increased police presence at Capitol Expressway and Ocala Avenue starting Thursday. The San Jose Police Department begins a two-week traffic enforcement operation August 28 to ensure motorists follow new turn restrictions in a light rail construction zone, transit officials said. The enforcement effort targets an intersection where turn restrictions took effect August 26.

Construction Zone Safety Drives Enforcement
The enforcement operation responds to new traffic patterns created by VTA's light rail construction work at the intersection. Stacey Hendler Ross, Deputy Director of Communications at VTA, said the agency's working closely with San Jose police to ensure safety in the construction zone. Transit agencies commonly coordinate with local law enforcement during construction projects to prevent accidents and protect workers, according to Federal Highway Administration guidelines. VTA didn't provide specific timeline or cost details for the construction project.
Turn Restrictions Now in Effect
The new restrictions prohibit left turns from eastbound Capitol Expressway to northbound Ocala Avenue and from southbound Ocala Avenue to westbound Capitol Expressway. Motorists must use alternate routes and follow detour signage posted throughout the area. Traffic volume data for the intersection wasn't immediately available. The San Jose Police Department didn't provide additional comment on how many officers will participate in the enforcement operation or what citation levels they expect.

Two-Week Operation Runs Through Mid-September
The enforcement operation continues through approximately September 11, officials said. VTA announced the restrictions August 21, giving drivers several days' notice before enforcement began. The agency said it'll release more details about the overall construction timeline, though officials haven't specified when that information will become available.
Drivers Should Plan Extra Time
Motorists traveling through the area should allow additional commute time and remain alert for temporary signage and construction activity. The restrictions remain in effect throughout the construction period, though officials haven't said when work will be completed. Riders can check Moovit for real-time updates on VTA light rail service and alternate routes during construction.
