Muni Offers Free Rides for New Year's Eve
San Francisco's Muni provided free rides from 8 PM on New Year's Eve through 5 AM on New Year's Day, transit officials said. The service covered all Muni routes during one of the year's busiest celebration nights. Jeffrey Tumlin, SFMTA Director of Transportation, said the initiative aimed to help riders get home safely without worrying about transportation costs. The agency announced the service December 23, continuing its annual tradition of offering free holiday rides.

SFMTA has offered free New Year's Eve service for several years as part of its commitment to public safety during major holidays, according to the transit agency. The initiative aligns with similar programs in other major cities, including Los Angeles Metro and King County Metro in Seattle, which also provided free rides to encourage safe transportation options. Transit agencies typically use free holiday service to reduce drunk driving incidents and support community celebrations. Officials said the program reflects the agency's broader approach to accessible transportation during high-traffic events.
The N Judah line ran every 12 minutes until 3 AM to accommodate late-night riders, officials said. Other routes maintained extended schedules to ensure coverage across the city's neighborhoods. SFMTA didn't disclose the cost of providing the free service or specify how many additional vehicles were deployed for the extended hours. The agency said the enhanced service aimed to reduce congestion in popular celebration areas while providing reliable alternatives to personal vehicles.

The free service period began at 8 PM on December 31 and continued through 5 AM on January 1, according to the transit agency. Extended late-night runs on key routes provided service well past typical operating hours. Ridership figures for the New Year's Eve service weren't immediately available. Officials said the timing ensured riders could reach celebrations throughout the evening and return home safely in the early morning hours.
Riders benefited from nine hours of free service across all Muni routes, eliminating fare concerns during the holiday celebration. The extended hours particularly helped those attending events in areas with limited late-night transportation options. Tumlin told reporters the agency wanted everyone to have a safe and enjoyable New Year's Eve by making it easier to get home without worrying about transportation availability.
