Muni celebrates transit workers as agency achieves highest customer satisfaction in 25 years

The SFMTA said the workforce's dedication recently helped Muni achieve its highest customer satisfaction rating in 25 years. Among those honored are 178 operators who've met safe driving standards for at least 15 years, including Cable Car Operator Singh Balraj Rai and Operator Gary Merritt.

Transit employees across multiple roles contribute to Muni's operations, from vehicle maintenance to rider safety. The agency said these workers are essential to making the system fast, safe, and reliable for daily commuters and visitors. Their combined efforts support one of the nation's busiest urban transit networks, serving hundreds of thousands of riders across bus, rail, and cable car lines. The recognition comes as transit agencies nationwide face workforce recruitment and retention challenges.

Behind-the-Scenes Teams Keep Fleet Moving

Muni's maintenance operations run around the clock to keep buses, streetcars, and cable cars in service. Maintenance Operations Manager Austin Stenger oversees 24/7 maintenance operations for Muni's bus fleet, while mechanics like Jenny Keosaat inspect everything from lights to air brakes on buses. Mechanic Jeena Villamor focuses on historic streetcars that serve the F Market & Wharves line. Chief Mechanical Officer Michael Henry, who started his career as a mechanic, now works to help the next generation join the trades.

Agency Invites Public Recognition

The SFMTA is encouraging San Francisco residents to thank transit workers they encounter and visit the agency's Transit Appreciation Day webpage to leave virtual shout-outs. The initiative aims to highlight the contributions of employees who work across operations, maintenance, and safety roles. Transit officials said the achievement reflects the dedication of operators, mechanics, and support staff who maintain service reliability. Riders can track real-time Muni arrivals and plan trips using tools like Moovit, which provides updates for San Francisco's bus, rail, and cable car routes throughout the city.
