SF Bay Area VTA Offers Free Rides for Transit Month
VTA offers free bus and light rail service Sept. 23 across Santa Clara County for Transit Month
VTA Offers Free Rides Sept. 23 for Transit Month
Valley Transportation Authority riders won't pay fares on Tuesday, September 23, transit officials said. All VTA bus and light rail services throughout Santa Clara County will be free for the day as part of Transit Month celebrations. The agency announced the promotion September 15, giving riders over a week to plan trips and experience the system at no cost.

Transit Month Celebration
The free fare day serves as VTA's way of thanking the community that relies on public transportation daily, according to the transit agency. September is recognized nationally as Transit Month, when agencies across the country celebrate public transportation's role in connecting communities. VTA operates approximately 500 buses and three light rail lines serving Santa Clara County, with roughly 40 million annual trips under normal ridership conditions. Officials didn't specify whether service frequency will be adjusted to accommodate potentially higher ridership on the free fare day.
System-Wide Free Service
The promotion applies to all VTA bus routes and light rail lines operating September 23, officials confirmed. Regular service schedules will run throughout the day, though VTA hasn't disclosed the cost of providing free service or released ridership projections for the event. Carolyn Gonot, General Manager and CEO, oversees the transit system that serves San Jose and surrounding communities in the South Bay. The agency hasn't announced whether this will become an annual Transit Month tradition.

One-Day Promotion
The free fare offer applies only to September 23, with regular fares resuming September 24, transit officials said. VTA hasn't provided details about current fare prices or how much revenue the agency typically collects on an average Tuesday. Other Bay Area transit agencies including San Francisco's Muni and Los Angeles Metro have offered similar promotional free fare days for special occasions and celebrations.
Rider Information
The free fare day offers regular commuters a break from transit costs and gives potential new riders a chance to try VTA services without financial commitment. Riders don't need special tickets or passes for September 23—simply board any VTA bus or light rail train throughout the day.
