Santa Clara County riders can now spot a vibrant new addition to VTA's bus fleet celebrating LGBTQ+ history and local leaders. Celebrating Diversity Through Public Transit

The Pride Bus initiative demonstrates VTA's commitment to recognizing the diverse communities it serves, according to the transit agency. Carolyn Gonot, VTA General Manager and CEO, said the bus is "a tribute to the courage and vision of LGBTQ+ leaders who have paved the way for a more inclusive society." The artwork features both nationally recognized figures like Harvey Milk, Marsha P. Johnson, Sylvia Rivera, and Bayard Rustin, alongside local leaders including Ken Yeager, Shay Franco-Clough, and Billy DeFrank. Officials didn't specify how long the Pride Bus will remain in service.

Honoring Icons and Local Advocates

The bus showcases prominent LGBTQ+ trailblazers who've made lasting impacts on civil rights and community advocacy. Ken Yeager, former Santa Clara County Supervisor and the first openly gay person elected to the county board in 2006, told VTA that "being honored on the VTA Pride Bus is incredibly meaningful." Billy DeFrank, a pioneering San Jose advocate whose legacy continues through the community center bearing his name, is also featured. Shay Franco-Clough, Executive Director of LGBTQ+ Silicon Valley, appears on the bus as well. Officials didn't release details about the design process or the artists involved in creating the artwork.

Rolling Through the County

The Pride Bus launched during Pride Month 2024 and operates on VTA's regular service routes throughout Santa Clara County. Officials said the bus travels the same routes as standard VTA buses, though they didn't specify which particular route numbers it's assigned to. The agency hasn't announced whether the Pride-themed wrap is temporary or permanent.

Community Response and Rider Information

Shay Franco-Clough, Executive Director of LGBTQ+ Silicon Valley, said "the Pride Bus is more than just a bus; it's a moving symbol of our community's resilience and strength." Riders throughout Santa Clara County may encounter the Pride Bus on any VTA route as it continues regular service. The initiative joins similar Pride-themed transit vehicles in cities like San Francisco, Seattle, and Los Angeles.
