SF Bay Area VTA Builds Electric Bus Future
VTA begins $15M electric bus charging infrastructure to expand zero-emission fleet
VTA Starts Work on Electric Bus Charging System
Valley Transportation Authority's construction of electric bus charging infrastructure will help expand the agency's zero-emission fleet in the San Jose area. VTA announced the project in September 2024, with construction now underway at agency facilities. The $15 million investment supports VTA's transition toward meeting California's 2040 mandate for 100% zero-emission transit buses, officials said.

California Mandate Drives Fleet Transition
The charging infrastructure project responds to California's Innovative Clean Transit regulation, adopted in 2018 by the state Air Resources Board. The regulation requires all public transit agencies to gradually transition to completely zero-emission bus fleets by 2040. VTA currently operates 20 battery-electric buses in its fleet of approximately 500 vehicles, according to the transit agency. Officials said the new charging infrastructure will enable the agency to add more electric buses while ensuring reliable operations across its service area.
Project Details and Investment
The charging infrastructure will be installed at VTA facilities throughout the service area, though officials haven't specified exact locations. The project's $15 million cost represents a significant investment in sustainable transportation, but officials didn't provide a breakdown of federal, state, or local funding sources. VTA hasn't announced how many charging stations will be installed or specified the type of charging technology being deployed. "This project represents a significant investment in our community's future and our commitment to sustainable transportation," Carolyn Gonot, general manager and CEO, said. "The new charging infrastructure will enable us to expand our zero-emission bus fleet and provide cleaner, quieter service to our riders."

Construction Timeline and Implementation
Construction is currently underway on the charging infrastructure, officials confirmed in September 2024. However, VTA hasn't provided a specific completion date for the project or said when the charging stations will become operational. The agency typically announces implementation timelines closer to project completion, but officials didn't indicate when additional details would be released.
