SF BART Ridership Climbs With Double-Digit Growth
Seven major BART stations post double-digit ridership gains in November year-over-year
BART Adds Riders in November With Growth
BART riders returned to the system in greater numbers during November, with seven major stations posting double-digit percentage increases compared to the same month last year. The growth reflects Bay Area commuters' increasing reliance on rail transit, transit officials said. Robert Powers, General Manager at BART, told reporters the momentum shows confidence in the system's reliability.

Recovery Continues After Pandemic Decline
The November gains continue BART's recovery from the pandemic, when ridership plummeted by over 90% during initial 2020 lockdowns. Before COVID-19, BART averaged approximately 400,000 weekday riders in 2019, though officials didn't specify how current ridership compares to that baseline. Transit agencies nationwide are experiencing varied recovery rates, with many still below pre-2020 levels. The announcement focused on year-over-year growth rather than comparison to pre-pandemic ridership levels.
Seven Stations See Double-Digit Increases
Embarcadero Station led the system with an 18.5% year-over-year increase, followed by Montgomery at 16.2% and Powell at 15.8%, according to BART data. Civic Center posted 14.3% growth, while MacArthur saw 13.7%, 19th Street Oakland gained 12.9%, and Downtown Berkeley added 11.4%. Officials didn't provide absolute ridership numbers or a system-wide average percentage. Powers said the increases show BART's meeting the needs of diverse ridership across the region.

Officials Credit Growing Transit Confidence
The ridership growth reflects increasing confidence in public transportation as commuters return to using the rail network, officials said in the January 15 announcement. BART attributed the gains to riders choosing the system for daily travel needs, though specific contributing factors like return-to-office policies or service improvements weren't detailed. Transit advocacy groups and independent analysts haven't yet publicly commented on the November data.
Riders Can Track Real-Time Service Updates
The sustained growth indicates more Bay Area residents are choosing rail transit for commutes and daily trips across the San Francisco-San Jose region. Officials said they'll continue monitoring ridership trends in coming months. Riders can access real-time BART schedules, service alerts, and trip planning through Moovit, which provides updates for routes throughout the Bay Area transit network.
