BART Offers Free Rides Sept. 7 for Transit Month
Bay Area commuters can ride BART for free on Sept. 7 as part of the transit agency's month-long celebration of Transit Month. BART announced Tuesday it'll host events throughout September to promote public transportation and engage riders across the five-county system. The free ride day is expected to cost the agency about $1.2 million in foregone revenue, officials said.
Transit Month Highlights Public Transportation Benefits
Transit Month is observed nationally each September, promoted by the American Public Transportation Association to raise awareness about public transit benefits. BART's celebration is part of broader efforts to rebuild ridership following pandemic-era declines, with the system currently at approximately 40-45% of pre-pandemic weekday levels. Robert Powers, BART's general manager, said Transit Month offers an opportunity to showcase the agency's commitment to sustainable, accessible transportation. Other major transit systems including LA Metro and Washington's WMATA have hosted similar celebrations in recent years.

Three Major Events Planned Throughout September
Beyond the Sept. 7 free ride day, BART will host Community Appreciation Day on Sept. 13 with giveaways and activities at various stations throughout the system. A Sustainability Fair is scheduled for Sept. 20 to highlight the agency's environmental initiatives. Bevan Dufty, BART's board president, said the events are designed to thank loyal riders and welcome new ones. Officials haven't disclosed the total budget for Transit Month activities or released projected attendance figures for the events.

Events Roll Out Across 50-Station System
The celebration will take place throughout BART's 131-mile system serving Alameda, Contra Costa, San Francisco, San Mateo and Santa Clara counties. Officials said specific station locations for Community Appreciation Day and the Sustainability Fair will be announced closer to the event dates. BART has participated in regional Transit Month activities in previous years, though 2025 marks the first time the agency has offered a system-wide free ride day specifically for the September observance.
Riders Can Track Transit Month Events
The Transit Month celebration aims to connect Bay Area residents with public transportation options while reducing congestion and emissions. Ian Griffiths, policy director for advocacy group Seamless Bay Area, said transit celebrations like this are important for building ridership and community support. BART serves approximately 260,000 riders on an average weekday across its 50 stations. Riders can check Moovit for real-time BART schedules and updates during Transit Month events.
