SF BART Invests $12M to Modernize Four Stations
Four San Mateo County BART stations to receive canopies, seating, and lighting upgrades
BART Adds $12M in San Mateo Station Upgrades
Four San Mateo County BART stations will get $12 million in improvements, transit officials announced Wednesday. The upgrades affect Millbrae, San Bruno, South San Francisco, and Colma stations, where riders'll see new canopies, seating, lighting, and accessibility features. Alicia Trost, BART Communications Manager, said the improvements will make stations "more comfortable, accessible, and welcoming for all riders."

Measure RR Funds Station Modernization
The station improvements come from Measure RR, the $3.5 billion bond measure Bay Area voters approved in November 2016. That funding supports infrastructure modernization across BART's 50-station system, including track replacement and station upgrades. Officials said the investments aim to enhance rider experience as the system works to rebuild ridership following pandemic-related declines. The four San Mateo County stations represent part of BART's broader effort to modernize aging infrastructure throughout the district.

Improvements Target Rider Comfort
The $12 million will fund new weather-protection canopies, additional seating areas, improved LED lighting, and updated wayfinding signage at the four stations. Accessibility enhancements will bring stations into better compliance with Americans with Disabilities Act requirements, officials said. The improvements also include general station maintenance and infrastructure repairs. Officials didn't provide a breakdown of how the funding will be allocated among the four stations, noting that specific costs depend on each station's scope and needs.

Timeline Remains Unspecified
BART officials announced the improvements Wednesday but didn't provide specific start or completion dates for work at individual stations. The projects are described as ongoing or planned, with timelines to be determined for each location. Transit agencies typically release detailed construction schedules once contracts are finalized and work is ready to begin. Officials said they'll provide more information as project planning advances.

Riders Can Track Project Updates
Commuters using Millbrae, San Bruno, South San Francisco, and Colma stations can expect gradual improvements as work progresses at each location. Officials didn't estimate how many daily riders use these four stations or project ridership impacts from the upgrades. Transit experts say station amenities like weather protection and improved lighting help attract riders by making transit more comfortable. Riders can check real-time service information and station updates through the Moovit app.
