SF BART Fares Rise 5.5% — But Predictability Helps Riders Plan
BART implements 5.5% fare increase across all stations and fare types starting January 1
BART Raises Fares 5.5% Across Bay Area
Bay Area commuters are paying more for BART trips after the transit agency implemented a 5.5% fare increase on January 1. The price adjustment affects all riders across BART's 50-station system spanning five counties, from San Francisco to the East Bay and South Bay. Robert Powers, General Manager, said the increase follows the agency's inflation-based fare policy adopted in 2018.

Inflation Policy Drives Automatic Adjustment
The fare increase stems from BART's 2018 Board policy that automatically ties fare adjustments to the regional Consumer Price Index. The BART Board of Directors approved the 5.5% increase on June 13, 2024, giving riders more than six months' advance notice before implementation. This approach reflects a broader industry trend toward predictable, formula-based fare increases rather than ad-hoc decisions, according to transit industry data. The policy means fare adjustments mirror cost increases BART faces for operations, labor, and materials.
All Fare Types Affected by Increase
The 5.5% adjustment applies to all BART fare types, including regular adult fares, discounted fares for youth, seniors, and disabled riders, and daily parking fees at BART stations. Pamela Herhold, Assistant General Manager and Chief Financial Officer, confirmed the increase affects trips of all distances throughout the system. Specific costs vary by distance traveled, with BART's distance-based fare structure meaning longer trips see larger dollar increases. Officials haven't disclosed the expected annual revenue increase from the fare adjustment.

Implementation Already Complete
The fare increase took effect January 1, 2025, with the new rates now in place across all BART stations and fare collection systems. Alicia Trost, Assistant General Manager of External Affairs and Chief Communications Officer, said riders using Clipper cards and all other payment methods are subject to the new fares. The six-month gap between Board approval and implementation gave commuters time to adjust their transit budgets.
Riders Face Higher Commute Costs
Daily commuters throughout the Bay Area who rely on BART for transportation will need to recalculate their monthly transit expenses to account for the higher fares. The increase affects BART's average weekday ridership across the 131-mile system. Riders can check current fares for their specific routes and plan their transit budgets accordingly.
