SF BART Expansion Brings New Hope to Silicon Valley
VTA gives media tour of BART Phase II construction site extending service to San Jose
VTA Shows Media BART Phase II Construction Site
Valley Transportation Authority officials gave local media a behind-the-scenes look at the BART Silicon Valley Phase II West Portal Construction Site on June 23, transit officials said. The tour offered a rare glimpse into ongoing work that'll extend BART service deeper into Santa Clara County. The $12.7 billion project will add four new stations and five miles of tunnel when it's completed in 2036, according to VTA.

Building on Phase I Success
The Phase II extension builds on the Berryessa Extension that opened in June 2020, which added 10 miles and two stations to connect Warm Springs to North San José. Construction on Phase II began in 2018, with major tunneling milestones achieved including a breakthrough at the West Portal site in September 2022. The project aims to reduce traffic congestion and provide sustainable transportation alternatives for Silicon Valley workers, students, and residents. Officials said the expansion represents a long-term investment in regional connectivity that voters approved through Measure A funding in 2000.
Major Infrastructure Investment
The tour showcased progress on the five-mile tunnel system that'll connect downtown San Jose to the existing BART network, according to VTA. Stacey Hendler Ross, Deputy Director of Communications at VTA, documented the construction milestone in a blog post about the media event. The project's $12.7 billion cost makes it one of the Bay Area's largest transit infrastructure investments, though officials haven't released a detailed breakdown of federal, state, and local funding shares. Specific ridership projections for the completed extension weren't available.

Timeline Extends to 2036
The Phase II extension is expected to be completed in 2036, according to VTA's current project timeline. That represents a delay from earlier projections due to construction complexities and funding challenges, officials said. The agency hasn't announced specific dates for when individual stations will open or when testing will begin. VTA said it'll release more detailed timeline information as construction progresses toward completion.
Connecting Silicon Valley
When completed, the extension will bring BART service to downtown San Jose and surrounding areas, providing direct rapid transit connections for thousands of daily commuters. Officials said the four new stations will serve major employment centers and residential neighborhoods throughout Santa Clara County. Riders can track construction updates and plan future trips using Moovit's real-time transit information for the Bay Area.
