Two women are leading one of the Bay Area's largest transit expansions as construction advances on the BART Silicon Valley Phase II extension. Sarah Wilson, construction director, and Carolyn Gonot, VTA's general manager and CEO, oversee the $12 billion project that'll extend BART through downtown San Jose to Santa Clara. The six-mile extension will add four stations—three underground—connecting the region to the broader Bay Area Rapid Transit network.

The Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority's making significant progress on the extension that'll transform regional connectivity across Silicon Valley. Wilson oversees field delivery, contract administration and risk allocation, while Gonot manages funding, governance and federal oversight through the Federal Transit Administration Capital Investment Grant program. The project's being delivered through multiple contract packages using a progressive design-build model, involving roughly 325 VTA staff and consultants plus about 175 contractors and subcontractors at peak operations.

At the West Portal site near Santa Clara Station, crews are building a roughly $400 million launch structure that'll serve as the launch point for the tunnel boring machine. The structure represents a major milestone as the project nears its tunnel launch phase. The project carries an estimated budget between $12.1 billion and $12.7 billion, with federal support providing crucial funding for the extension. Officials said the progressive design-build approach allows for flexibility as construction advances through multiple phases.

The four new stations will provide residents and workers with enhanced access to jobs, education and opportunities throughout the region. Officials haven't announced a specific completion date for the extension, though construction's actively progressing at multiple sites. The project demonstrates the region's commitment to sustainable transportation solutions and long-term economic growth.

Riders in downtown San Jose and Santa Clara will gain direct access to the BART network once the extension opens, eliminating transfers and reducing travel times to San Francisco and other Bay Area destinations. The three underground stations will integrate with existing transit services in the area. Officials said they'll release more details about station locations and service plans as construction progresses.
