SEPTA Key Cards Expire March 31, 2026

Thousands of Philadelphia transit riders need to replace their SEPTA Key cards before they expire March 31, 2026, transit officials said. Customers with registered cards can transfer their Travel Wallet funds and passes to a new card online through SEPTAKey.org or the SEPTA app. The agency's urging riders to act now to avoid service disruptions when older cards stop working.

Why Cards Are Expiring

The expiration affects certain SEPTA Key cards issued during the system's initial rollout years, according to the transit agency. Like credit cards and other payment technology, fare cards have limited lifespans due to wear on magnetic strips and embedded chips. SEPTA officials said registering cards protects riders if their card is lost or stolen and simplifies the transfer process. The agency didn't specify how many cards are affected by the March 2026 expiration date.

Replacement Process and Costs

A new SEPTA Key card costs $4.95 and can be purchased at Fare Kiosks, Sales Locations, or external retailers throughout the Philadelphia region. If customers register their new card within 30 days, the $4.95 purchase fee will be credited to their Travel Wallet, transit officials said. Riders have three options to transfer fares: visiting a SEPTA Sales Location, calling the SEPTA Key Customer Call Center at 855-567-3782, or using the Card to Card Replacement feature online. Unregistered cards require contacting the Customer Call Center for refunds of unused Travel Wallet funds.

Alternative Payment Options

Riders who don't want to replace their Key cards can use contactless payment options with credit cards, debit cards, smartphones, or watches for Bus, Metro, and Regional Rail fares, according to SEPTA. When using contactless payment on Bus and Metro, the first two transfers are free. The agency didn't say whether contactless payments offer the same fare capping benefits as registered Key cards.

What Riders Should Do

SEPTA's encouraging all riders to register their cards for better protection and convenience, officials said. Registered cardholders can manage their accounts online and recover funds if cards are lost. Riders can check their card's expiration date printed on the front of their SEPTA Key card.
