SEPTA M Line Buses Replace Trains March 29-May 9

SEPTA's M Line riders will need to use shuttle buses instead of trains for part of their trips starting late March. The transit agency will replace train service between Bridgeport Station and Norristown Transit Center from March 29 through May 9, 2026, officials announced. Nearly 1,900 passengers cross the affected section daily, representing more than a third of the line's 5,600 weekday trips.

Century-Old Bridge Needs Major Repairs

The service change stems from a $55 million rehabilitation project for the Bridgeport Viaduct, a 3,525-foot bridge built in 1911 that carries the M Line over the Schuylkill River. The project includes structural steel repairs, concrete work on abutments and piers, bearing replacement, deck replacement, and repainting the entire structure, according to SEPTA. Officials said the historic bridge requires extensive work to maintain safe operations. The agency's also replacing the stairway at Norristown Transit Center as part of the project.

Service Continues South of Bridgeport

Train service will operate normally between Bridgeport Station and 69th Street Transit Center throughout the construction period, officials said. Shuttle buses will connect riders at Bridgeport Station to continue north to Norristown Transit Center. The project scope includes maintenance catwalk replacement and comprehensive structural repairs designed to extend the bridge's service life. SEPTA said the work requires complete closure of the viaduct section to ensure worker safety and project efficiency.

Phased Work Avoids Summer Events

Construction will take approximately one year to complete, with the initial phase running through May 9, 2026. Additional outages are planned for later in 2026 and early 2027, though SEPTA hasn't released specific dates for those phases. Officials said they're scheduling work in phases to avoid disruptions during major Philadelphia events in summer 2026, including FIFA World Cup matches, the MLB All-Star Game, and America's 250th birthday celebration.

Riders Should Plan Extra Travel Time

Passengers using stations between Bridgeport and Norristown should expect longer trips due to the bus transfer, officials said. SEPTA's released a modified M Line schedule that accounts for shuttle bus connections. The agency recommends riders plan ahead and allow additional travel time during the construction period.
