SEPTA Offers Free Rides for Broad Street Run May 3
Runners competing in Philadelphia's Independence Blue Cross Broad Street Run can ride SEPTA's Broad Street Line for free on race day, May 3, 2026. The transit agency will provide complimentary service starting at 4 am to help thousands of registered competitors reach the starting line at Broad Street and West Fisher Avenue. Participants must show their official race bib number to a SEPTA cashier to access the free rides, which continue until noon for runners returning from the finish line.

Race Day Transit Service Begins Before Dawn
SEPTA's expanded service for the annual 10-mile race reflects the event's significant impact on Philadelphia's transit system. The Broad Street Run typically draws more than 30,000 runners, making it one of the largest road races in the country. Transit officials said the early morning service helps competitors avoid parking challenges near the starting line while reducing congestion in North Philadelphia neighborhoods. The Glenside Combined Line will connect runners to Fern Rock Transit Center for transfers to the Broad Street Line, providing access from suburban areas.
39 Bus Routes Face Detours During Race
SEPTA will detour 39 bus routes beginning as early as 5:45 am through approximately 5 pm on May 3. Affected routes include the 3, 4, 7, 9, 12, 16, 17, 21, 23, 27, 29, 31, 32, 33, 37, 38, 39, 40, 41, 42, 43, 44, 45, 48, 53, 54, 56, 60, 61, 63, 64, 68, 71, 75, 79, 81, 82, 124 and 125. Transit officials said detour information is subject to change, with additional route modifications possible throughout the day due to unscheduled road closures. Both express and local Broad Street Line trains will run to accommodate race participants and regular Sunday riders.

Free Service Runs From 4 AM Until Noon
The first Broad Street Line train departs NRG Station at 4 am on race day, giving early arrivals time to reach the 7 am start. After the race concludes, runners displaying their race bibs can ride free from the finish line back to the starting line until noon. SEPTA accepts contactless credit and debit cards, SEPTA Key Card, cash, and Quick Trip tickets for regular riders not participating in the race.
Riders Should Plan Ahead for Detours
Transit officials encouraged riders to download the SEPTA app before race day to check real-time service updates and plan trips around the extensive bus detours. The SEPTA Park app helps drivers find and pay for parking at transit stations. Regular Sunday riders should expect delays and crowding on the Broad Street Line throughout the morning as thousands of runners use the system. Moovit provides real-time transit updates and alternative route planning for SEPTA services during special events.
