SEPTA Coordinates Dog Rescue at West Philly Station

Dog Rescued From SEPTA Track Beam in West Philly
A small dog trapped on a support beam above SEPTA train tracks at 63rd and Market Street was rescued Sunday evening after a multi-agency operation in West Philadelphia. The black Shih Tzu mix, later named Dottie, was pulled to safety by Animal Protection Officer Kevin using a cherry picker, leash and blanket. ACCT Philly said the visibly shaken dog is now safe and receiving care.

Multi-Agency Coordination
The rescue required coordination between SEPTA police, ACCT Philly's Animal Protection officers and SEPTA maintenance workers, officials said. Witnesses reported seeing the dog running along the tracks before she became stuck on top of a support pillar above the platform. SEPTA police contacted ACCT Philly, whose officers worked with maintenance crews to bring specialized equipment to the elevated station. The operation highlighted the challenges of rescuing animals from transit infrastructure, where standard ground-level approaches aren't possible.
Adoption Interest Expected
Dottie isn't microchipped, though officials believe she had a previous owner. If no owner claims her by Tuesday, she'll be transferred to Street Tails Animal Rescue, ACCT Philly said. Sarah Barnett, ACCT Philly's executive director, said the organization expects hundreds of adoption inquiries due to Dottie's high-profile rescue story. However, Barnett reminded potential adopters that many other dogs are waiting for homes whose stories simply aren't known to the public.

Recovery Timeline
The rescue took place Sunday evening at the 63rd and Market platform on SEPTA's Market-Frankford Line. ACCT Philly thanked SEPTA police and maintenance workers for their assistance in the operation. Officials didn't specify how long Dottie was stranded on the beam before witnesses reported her location, or whether train service was affected during the rescue.
Transit Animal Incidents
Animals on transit property pose safety risks to both the animals and operations, though officials didn't say whether this incident caused service delays. Riders using SEPTA's Market-Frankford Line can check Moovit for real-time service updates and trip planning. ACCT Philly emphasized that while Dottie's rescue drew attention, dozens of other dogs at the shelter need homes just as urgently.
