Scotland Gains New Rail Link to London
New rail routes connect Tartu, Klagenfurt, and other European cities to major hubs in 2026
Europe Adds Rail Links to Tartu, Klagenfurt in 2026
European travelers will gain access to dozens of lesser-known cities through new rail connections launching throughout 2026, transit officials said. The expansion connects destinations like Tartu in Estonia, Klagenfurt in Austria, and Stresa in Italy to major hubs across the continent. The routes aim to make off-the-beaten-path destinations more accessible while showcasing Europe's diverse culture and history.

Network Expansion Targets Cultural Destinations
The 2026 rail expansion represents a major transformation of Europe's transit network, connecting smaller cities to international routes. New services will link cities like Stirling in Scotland, Tartu in Estonia, and Klagenfurt in Austria to the broader European network, officials said. The expansion includes both high-speed daytime services and overnight sleeper trains. Transit agencies across the continent are coordinating the rollout to ensure seamless connections between national rail systems.
Routes Span Scotland to Montenegro
Lumo will launch low-cost service from London Euston to Stirling in mid-2026, with stops in Lockerbie, Carlisle, Preston, and Nuneaton. Austria's Koralm Railway project will cut travel time between Graz and Klagenfurt from three hours to 45 minutes with a 33km tunnel opening in 2026. Beginning in January 2026, direct trains will link Tallinn to Tartu and onwards to Riga, Latvia. The European Sleeper route from Amsterdam and Brussels to Milan will stop in Stresa starting June 18, 2026.

Service Launches Throughout Year
The new routes will roll out in phases throughout 2026, with the Tallinn-Tartu-Riga service beginning in January and the Stirling service launching in mid-2026. Direct rail service between Budapest and Belgrade will resume in early 2026, with some trains continuing to Vienna. France's Chemins de Fer de Provence will connect Digne-les-Bains to Nice starting in 2026, though officials haven't specified an exact launch date for that route.
Travelers Gain Access to Hidden Destinations
The expanded network will make previously hard-to-reach cities accessible to international travelers. Montenegro's Bar will connect through high-speed rail from Subotica in Hungary to Belgrade, Serbia. Switzerland's Brig will serve as an Alps gateway with new connections from Dortmund and Cologne. Poland's Przemyśl will see increased international service with a new EuroNight train merging carriages from Munich, Prague, and Budapest. Moovit provides real-time updates and trip planning for European rail routes as new services launch.
