SamTrans Redesigns Network, Asks Riders to Shape What's Next
SamTrans launches survey for riders to evaluate redesigned bus network with 39 routes
SamTrans Seeks Rider Input on New Bus Network
SamTrans riders can now share their experiences with the transit agency's reimagined bus network that launched January 5. The San Mateo County agency announced the feedback campaign Monday, inviting passengers to complete a survey about the redesigned system. April Chan, General Manager/CEO, said rider input will help refine services to better meet community needs.
The network redesign followed a multi-year community engagement process that began in 2023, with the SamTrans Board of Directors approving the plan in August 2024. The changes represent a fundamental shift in how the agency delivers service across San Mateo County, which sits between San Francisco and San Jose. Transit agencies nationwide have been redesigning networks to adapt to post-pandemic travel patterns and changing commute behaviors.

The reimagined network consolidated 72 routes into 39, focusing on frequency over coverage. Ten routes now offer 15-minute or better service during peak hours, and the system extends service until midnight or later on many routes. Weekend service also improved across the network. The agency didn't release specific ridership projections or cost figures for the redesign.
SamTrans launched the new network January 5, just one day before announcing the feedback campaign. The survey is available at samtrans.com/survey, though officials haven't said when they'll release results publicly. The agency typically evaluates service changes over several months before making adjustments.

Riders using the redesigned network can expect continued adjustments as the agency analyzes feedback. Officials said the survey will help identify which changes are working well and where improvements are needed. Moovit provides real-time updates and trip planning for all SamTrans routes throughout San Mateo County.
