SamTrans is installing artificial intelligence-enabled safety cameras on 235 fixed-route buses, transit officials said. The San Mateo County Transit District's Board of Directors approved the technology deployment, which'll monitor both roadway conditions and driver behavior to improve safety for the agency's more than 10 million annual riders. The system uses dual-facing cameras that detect risky conditions and trigger real-time alerts, officials said.

Technology Builds on Previous Safety Initiatives
The deployment builds on SamTrans' previous experience using AI-enabled dash cameras on contracted bus services, according to the transit agency. Officials said the technology aims to reduce collisions and improve safety for passengers, operators, and the public throughout the service area. The system's designed to detect unsafe driving behaviors, improve operator awareness of pedestrians, support post-incident review, and enable safety coaching and training. SamTrans operates 74 bus routes, two on-demand service areas, and paratransit services across San Mateo County.
Contract Details and Implementation Costs
The board authorized a contract with San Francisco-based Samsara Inc. to provide the dual-facing AI dash cameras and cloud-based services. The three-year base contract won't exceed $240,000, with an option for up to three additional one-year extensions totaling another $240,000, officials said. The annual subscription cost for the service is approximately $79,000, with a one-time shipping cost of $2,000 in the first year. Funding's included in the agency's Fiscal Year 2026 and 2027 operating budgets.

Rollout Timeline and System Capabilities
Officials didn't provide a specific timeline for when the camera installations will begin or how long the full deployment will take. The AI technology monitors conditions in real-time, using algorithms to identify risky situations and trigger immediate alerts to operators. The cloud-based system also stores footage for post-incident review and analysis, helping supervisors identify training opportunities and improve overall fleet safety.
Impact on Riders and Service Quality
The safety cameras are expected to reduce collision rates and improve service reliability across SamTrans' fixed-route network. Officials said the technology will help protect passengers while also supporting operators with real-time safety alerts. Riders can track their SamTrans routes and receive service updates through Moovit, which provides real-time transit information for the San Francisco Bay Area.
