SamTrans Celebrates 50 Years with Music Contest
SamTrans offers Bay Area musicians $500 prizes and vinyl record spots in 50th anniversary contest
SamTrans Launches Music Contest for 50th Year
Bay Area musicians can now compete for cash prizes and vinyl recognition through a new SamTrans contest celebrating the agency's 50th anniversary. The transit system launched the competition April 17, inviting local artists to submit original songs inspired by transit, movement, and community connection, officials said. Eight finalists will each receive $500, with winning tracks featured on a commemorative pressed vinyl record.

Contest Open to Nine-County Bay Area
The competition welcomes residents from San Mateo County and the greater nine-county Bay Area region, according to the transit agency. Artists can submit tracks between one and five minutes long in MP3 or WAV format, or via streaming link. Officials said the contest aims to connect the agency's transit legacy with the region's vibrant music community. SamTrans has served San Mateo County since 1976 and has twice been named Outstanding Public Transportation System by the American Public Transportation Association.
Professional Judges and Public Voting
Entries will be reviewed by music and transit industry professionals, with public voting also included in the judging process, officials confirmed. The contest seeks songs that capture themes of movement, connection, and community through transit. Officials didn't specify how many judges will participate or what percentage of the final decision will come from public votes versus professional review. SamTrans operates 74 bus routes, two on-demand service areas, and paratransit, serving more than 10 million riders annually.

Submissions Close June 16
The submission period runs through June 16, with judging and public voting scheduled for June 17-23, according to the agency. Winners will be announced June 24 at a special event, though officials haven't said where the event will take place or whether it'll be open to the public. The agency said additional details about the winner announcement will be released closer to the date.
Riders Can Track Contest Updates
The music contest offers Bay Area artists a chance to celebrate public transit's role in connecting communities while earning recognition for their work. Officials said the commemorative vinyl record will serve as a lasting tribute to both the agency's 50-year history and the region's creative talent. Moovit provides real-time updates for SamTrans routes throughout San Mateo County, helping riders plan trips while the agency celebrates this milestone anniversary.
