SamTrans Adjusts SF Holiday Service for Riders
SamTrans to run Sunday schedule on Christmas Day with regular service on Christmas Eve
SamTrans Cuts Service for Christmas Day 2025
SamTrans riders planning holiday travel should prepare for modified bus service during the Christmas period. The San Mateo County transit agency announced it'll operate on a Sunday schedule with reduced service on Christmas Day, Thursday, December 25, 2025. On Christmas Eve, December 24, buses will run on a regular non-school schedule.
The schedule adjustments follow standard practice among Bay Area transit agencies during major holidays. SamTrans, which serves San Mateo County communities between San Francisco and San Jose, typically reduces service on holidays due to lower ridership demand. The agency operates approximately 14 million annual trips across its route network, according to transit officials. Similar holiday service reductions are planned by neighboring agencies including BART and VTA.

The regular non-school schedule on Christmas Eve means buses will run on typical weekday routes without additional school-related trips. Officials didn't specify how many routes will be affected or the exact percentage of service reduction on Christmas Day's Sunday schedule. The agency announced the changes December 19 via its official social media channels. SamTrans serves a population of more than 764,000 people across San Mateo County.
The modified schedules take effect December 24 for Christmas Eve service and December 25 for Christmas Day operations. SamTrans follows the same holiday service pattern it used in 2024, when the agency also operated on a Sunday schedule for Christmas. Officials said service will return to regular weekday schedules on December 26.

Riders should check specific route schedules before traveling during the holiday period and allow extra time for trips. April Chan, General Manager and CEO of SamTrans, oversees the agency's operations across San Mateo County. Passengers can access real-time schedule information and service alerts through Moovit to plan their holiday travel throughout the Bay Area transit system.
