Route 128 Reopens After Morning Crash Delays
Two crashes in Canton and Westwood closed multiple Route 128 lanes until 8 a.m. Friday
Route 128 Reopens After Two Crashes Delay Commute
All lanes on Route 128 have reopened following two separate crashes that snarled the Friday morning commute, the Massachusetts Department of Transportation confirmed. The highway fully reopened around 8 a.m. on May 1, 2026, after incidents in Canton and Westwood closed multiple lanes and caused significant delays for northbound commuters during rush hour.

Two Separate Incidents Closed Multiple Lanes
The more severe crash occurred in Canton around 6:30 a.m. at Exit 25, involving two commercial trucks and a passenger vehicle. Three right lanes were initially closed due to the Canton crash, which created a large debris field. One of the commercial trucks was carrying fertilizer, complicating cleanup efforts. Earlier, a second crash in Westwood closed two right lanes at Exit 28 due to a fuel spill. The Westwood incident occurred around 2 a.m. when a Ryder truck collided with a tractor-trailer in the breakdown lane.
Multiple Injuries Reported in Both Crashes
Two occupants of the passenger vehicle involved in the Canton crash sustained injuries and were transported to Boston Medical Center, officials said. At least one driver was injured in the Westwood crash, which remains under investigation. The extent of injuries wasn't immediately available. The Canton incident involved significant vehicle damage, while the Westwood crash resulted in a fuel spill that required specialized cleanup crews before lanes could safely reopen.
Cleanup Efforts Extended Through Morning Rush
The Westwood crash scene was cleared first, with crews working through the early morning hours to address the fuel spill. The Canton incident took longer to clear due to the debris field and the involvement of multiple commercial vehicles. All lanes were confirmed open by 8 a.m., though residual delays continued as traffic patterns normalized. Officials didn't provide details on whether citations were issued in either crash.

Commuters Face Extended Delays During Rush Hour
The incidents caused significant delays for commuters traveling northbound on Route 128 during the morning rush hour, with backups extending several miles. Drivers who regularly use the corridor experienced delays of 30 minutes or more during peak travel times.
